I built VIN Inspector Pro after watching too many friends, classmates, and first-time buyers fall into the same trap. They'd find a used car that seemed like a great deal, skip the research because paid reports cost $30 to $40, buy it, and then get hit with hundreds or thousands of dollars in surprise repairs within the first few months.
The information to avoid this is out there. Government crash test ratings, recall databases, owner complaint records, fuel economy data, technical service bulletins. But it's scattered across a dozen different websites (NHTSA, EPA, IIHS) and none of them make it easy for someone who doesn't know what to look for. So most people just skip it, cross their fingers, and hope for the best.

NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) maintains one of the most comprehensive vehicle safety databases in the world. It's funded by your tax dollars and entirely free to query. The same goes for the EPA's fuel economy database. These sources cover vehicle recalls, crash test ratings from controlled government testing, owner-filed complaints, technical service bulletins, and full vehicle specifications, all at no cost. VIN Inspector Pro was built to make all of that instantly accessible in one clean report, instead of requiring buyers to know six different government websites and how to navigate each one.

Launched in V3, the Photo Inspector lets you upload up to 10 photos of any used car, from online listings or taken yourself, and uses GPT-4 Vision to analyze them for 10 categories of issues that are visible if you know what to look for.
The AI scans for dents and body damage, repaint and overspray signs (indicators of hidden accident repairs), rust and corrosion, flood damage evidence, stolen car indicators like VIN tampering or replaced ignition cylinders, odometer fraud clues from pedal and seat wear inconsistent with the claimed mileage, airbag deployment evidence hidden by dashboard repairs, frame and structural damage, tire condition, and generates repair cost estimates for visible damage.
After the photo analysis, an AI chat advisor opens with full context of what was found. You can ask "Should I buy this car?", "How much should I negotiate?", "What are the biggest red flags?" and get specific, honest answers based on what the AI actually saw in the photos.
Every piece of information in a VIN Inspector Pro report comes from verified, publicly available sources. The vehicle specifications come from the NHTSA Vehicle Information API, which decodes every 17-character VIN in their database. Recall data is pulled directly from NHTSA's recall database, which is updated in real time as new recalls are issued. Crash test ratings come from NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). Owner complaint data comes from the NHTSA consumer complaint database, where any owner can file a report. Fuel economy data comes from the EPA's fueleconomy.gov, which publishes official MPG ratings from standardized testing. Market pricing comes from real-time scraping of active listings. AI analysis is powered by OpenAI's GPT models.
